San Juan is the capital and most populous city in Puerto Rico, founded in 1521 by Juan Ponce de León, who named it City of Puerto Rico (Rich Port) and the oldest city under U.S. jurisdiction.

The history of San Juan begins a long time before its official foundation, in 1493, during his second voyage, Christopher Columbus landed in Puerto Rico. He named the island “San Juan Bautista”, in honor of John the Baptist. But was not until 1508, that the Spanish government appointed Juan Ponce de León as the first governor of the island.
Today, San Juan is known as “The Walled City” and is one of the biggest and best natural harbors in the Caribbean and is the second oldest European-founded city in the Americas. The architecture of San Juan is very diverse, due to its size and all the cultural influences received during its existence. The oldest part of the city, known as Old San Juan, mostly features the influence of Spanish architecture.
The architecture is more varied in other districts of the city, for instance, the district of Santurce features a lot of influence from art deco, while the districts of Hato Rey feature more modern structures.
The Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is a joint civil-military international airport located in Carolina, Puerto Rico, three miles southeast of San Juan. It is the busiest airport in the Caribbean region by passenger traffic.
